Yim Tin Tsai Pier is situated at Yim Tin Tsai in Sai Kung District. Sai Kung Hoi Festival has been held in Sai Kung since 2022 featuring art pieces inspired by the lives of islanders in Yim Tin Tsai.
Learn moreUpon arriving at the island, heading east along the narrow path, you can see St Joseph's Chapel, a Grade 2 historic building. Between 1863 and 1867, missionaries began to settle in Sai Kung, and Yim Tin Tsai gradually became a Catholic village. The St Joseph's Chapel, which was constructed approximately in 1890, is said to have witnessed the religious conversion of the island’s Hakka villagers. The chapel won the Award of Merit at the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2005.
Next to the St Joseph's Chapel is the island's Heritage Exhibition Centre, which was converted from Ching Po primary school, the only primary school for young children from Yim Tin Tsai and nearby villages. It offers a small display of artefacts, including traditional Hakka attire, utensils and farming tools.
Salt pans in the south are the only natural salt pans in Hong Kong. It is said that villagers made a living by selling salt in the old days and that their supply was able to meet the demand from the entire Sai Kung. However, as salt production worldwide started to be industrialised, the salt production industry in Yim Tin Tsai began to decline. The salt pans revitalization project was granted the Award of Distinction by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conversation in 2015.
