Lai Chi Wo Pier was built in the 1960s, and is situated at the Northeast New Territories, within the Double Haven Geo-Area of Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark and Yan Chau Tong Marine Park, while part of it is situated within Plover Cove Country Park. It is the major gateway for the public to access Lai Chi Wo Village.
Learn moreLai Chi Wo Village was built more than three centuries ago with over 200 houses, laid out in precise horizontal and longitudinal rows according to geomancy rules, and protected by fung shui walls. The Hakka village of Lai Chi Wo was recognized by UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation and some old homes have been transformed into shops and visitor centres. On weekends or public holidays, village stores and stalls offer a variety of Hakka foods and dishes.
Close to Lai Chi Wo Village, there is a dense forested area, namely Fung Shui Woods. In accordance with the fung shui philosophy of living in harmony with nature, villagers planted the trees and hoped they would bring them good luck and wealth. Fung Shui Woods is home to over 100 plant species, including some century-old trees, such as the Hollow Tree which has numerous holes in the centre of its trunk.
Next to Lai Chi Wo Village, you can come across Lai Chi Wo Cultural Hub inside a restored village house. The cultural hub showcases a collection of exhibits, including rock specimens, farming tools, and traditional Hakka attire, offering visitors a better understanding of the local history and ecology.
To the east of Lai Chi Wo Cultural Hub, there is a mangroves forest. In this coastal mangrove forest, you can see some local climbing shrubs, namely White-flowered Derris. They hang from trees and form arches. Now, their stems are measuring up to 30 cm in diameter, which have probably taken hundreds of years to grow to this size.
