Located next to the pier, the Hung Shing Temple was built more than 130 years ago to honour Hung Shing, who was also known as “God of the South Sea”, for protecting fishermen and sea traders. The temple's heritage conservation won the Outstanding Project Award of the “2000 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards” and was declared as a monument in 2002. During the second lunar month each year, the space in front of the temple will be used to hold the celebration for Hung Shing Festival, featuring a series of activities including lion and dragon dancing and a Chinese opera performance.
Kau Sai Village Story Room is just next to the temple. Operated by the local villagers, the story room exhibits a wide range of cultural relics, such as historic fishing implements, old photographs of Kau Sai Village, and local herbs used in Hakka culture. The story room closes on the first three days of the Lunar New Year, and one month from the 20th of the first month in the lunar year. For the rest of the year, it opens from 10am to 4pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
Standing on a viewing pavilion in the east of Kau Sai Village Story Room, you can see Kau Sai Strait. Some hexagonal rock columns were formed after the volcanic eruption 140 million years ago. One of the broken-off rock fragments became the two-metre wide Scallop Rock we can see from the viewing pavilion today. The Rock looks exactly like a scallop!
